With Summer nearly upon us we’ll all be looking to cool down and refresh from hot days and warm nights. Whether it’s the neighborhood ice cream truck, a trip to your local creamery, or enjoying hydrating watermelon or fresh berries, there are a few things to know about sweets and sugar.
Sugar For Survival
As humans, we are biologically programmed to seek out sugar. Our prehistoric ancestors faced famine and food shortages. Seeking out, and storing sugar as fat in our bodies is an evolutionary survival mechanism! The thing is, today, there is an overabundance of sugar in our diets. Our bodies are continually adjusting to regulate our blood sugar balance through hormone signaling. When levels are too high, insulin is secreted to clear sugar from the bloodstream. When blood sugar levels are too low, glucagon is secreted to break down stored sugar and send it to the bloodstream.

Natural Vs. Processed
Natural sugars are found in fruits and vegetables. These are ideal because you’re also getting the benefit of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber.
Processed foods often contain added sugar and tend to be higher in calories and lower in nutritional value. Further, without the fiber benefits from whole foods that make us feel fuller, we tend to overeat processed foods.
Foods that contain sneaky (and often surprising) added sugar include:
plant milks
cured/deli meats
kombucha
condiments
protein powders
salad dressings
sauces
canned soups
cereals
granola/energy bars
yogurt

Some Easy Tips
Our bodies do need carbohydrates to perform the millions of daily functions required to sustain life. Just be mindful of the quality and quantity of carbs and sugar you’re consuming.
Make sure to prioritize eating healthy proteins and fat. And when you’re reaching for those sweet treats this summer, choose whole fruits whenever possible. And, keep treats as a once in a while special occasion.
